A Deeper Dive into Topic A: Artificial Intelligence in the International Context

Hey delegates!

I wanted to check in on Topic A and how the research on AI is constantly changing. With the emergence of ChatGPT, other companies are in a tech race to integrate AI into their search engines. Recently, Google and Baidu have unveiled plans to release chatbots in the near future.

ChatGPT, a search engine app developed by OpenAI, is the fastest-growing consumer app ever. It appears to have endless capabilities, including generating articles, AI art, and even assisting with code. It has prompted other companies to develop their own versions in response to the growing demand.

Baidu, the Chinese tech giant, announced "Ernie," which stands for "Enhanced Representation through Knowledge Integration." The company is set to finish internal testing by the end of March (NYT). Google also announced Monday that they would launch a chatbot service, "Bard." CEO Sundar Pichai announced in an internal memo that "we'll be enlisting every Googler to help shape Bard" (CNBC).

While Google, Baidu, and other companies including Microsoft and Facebook are quickly looking to answer ChatGPT, it is fair to be skeptical about the rapid advances in artificial intelligence. On one hand, this development in the AI revolution demonstrates the usefulness of tools in helping professionals, like programmers. However, critics would point to Harari's point that people are one step closer to being replaced by AI and losing their "political and economic value."

Another point I would make is that the dominant companies in informational technology are mainly from the US and China. Their market dominance and vast resources enable them to produce powerful search engines in relatively short periods of time. What does this mean for the data economy discussed in the Topic Synopsis? Will the data economy stay concentrated in these two countries? What types of action can be done to prevent this?

Feel free to share your questions or comments on the direction of AI! If you would like to read further, I've linked my references below. We'd love to hear your thoughts!
